Displaying key vocabulary in the German classroom is a really simple and successful way of creating a German ambiance, showing***language in its real-world use***, and keeping language fresh in students’ minds, particularly in the introductory phase of that particular vocabulary set. There are 18 breakfast items in this word wall, though I may not actually have all the items in my learning plan. I tend to include additional language to help students develop language skills and awareness in general. There is implicit grammatical input, with a focus on the definite article in German, a range of masculine, feminine and neuter, singular and plural. We look at cognates and near-cognates, and talk about similarities and differences between the words in German and English. We discuss breakfast in general, what we like to eat, or we’d like to try. In this way, the word wall becomes a real learning tool, and not simply attractive classroom decor. This set features ten differentiated word searches, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. It focuses on 33 Spanish Christmas words, which I also use as a prompt to stimulate discussion about Spanish Christmas practices and customs, and we talk about what students know about other Christmas traditions around the world. The nouns feature masculine and feminine, singular and plural and both definite and indefinite articles, which is a great way of working on and consolidating those grammatical concepts too. The workbook focuses on formation and conjugation, rather than usage, though it’s definitely useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb formation and conjugation. For example, students do often try to conflate what they know about conjugation in their first language, and the language they are learning, and those with English as a first language frequently look for a word that is the equivalent of would, until they familiarise themselves with the fact that the notion of conditional is indicated in the verb ending. I see this a lot with the future tense too, and tend to introduce both tenses quite closely together. It’s also easy to confuse the future tense endings with the conditional tense endings, and targeted practice helps to address that really well.
